Bwindi impenetrable national park is one of the great tourism destinations in Uganda. The national park if known to have a forest called the Bwindi impenetrable forest which covers a surface area of about 331km2. It is located in south western Uganda in Kanungu District, the forest is on the edge of the Albertine Rift ( the western branch of the East African Rift, at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2607 metres).
The park was established in 1991 and in 1994, it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site because of its ecological importance. Bwindi forest became popular to the world because of Gorilla trekking! The forest is a habitat for more than half of the world’s mountain Gorilla population. The mountain Gorillas are very dangerous creatures and the forest possesses a quiet big population of people who are over 360 while the gorillas are approximately 620. This has rapidly increased poaching, diseases and habitat loss.
Activities that usually take place at Bwindi impenetrable forest and the most famous of it is Gorilla trekking. This activity is the most as to why people visit Bwindi impenetrable national park because the it provides an incredible adventure for a life time. In Bwindi impenetrable forest there are four trailheads from where one tracks one of gorilla families for which is obtained for visitors therefore permits are kept for them. More gorilla families have become accustomed for visitors and this calls for many gorilla permits being available at Bwindi impenetrable every day.
Another activity its Gorilla habituation experience which is in Rushaga and this means to spend much time with gorillas. Researchers have proven it that Uganda is the only country where a tourist can have many hours with mountain gorillas on a gorilla habituation in Bwindi impenetrable forest and this activity is said to be one of the great experiences because of the time one has with family of mountain gorillas.
Furthermore there is hiking through Bwindi impenetrable forest as one of activites that are liked by visitors. Hiking at Bwindi usually takes a day unless one gets a long hike from north of Bwindi to the south which calls for two day hike. This is because one will have to get a sleep over at called Nkuringo and the next morning one continues to Lake Mutanda and crosses it on a local man made boot which well then stop at kisoro town.
Additionally, there is birding in Bwindi impenetrable forest. This is one of famous and top known birding destinations in Africa. Bwindi has a lot of bird species which are over 347 species where the biggest percentage is found in the Albertine rift region and the rest of the other species are found in the around the park.
Lastly other activities include mountain bike rides through Buhoma and other areas of the park and this kind of rides usually take around 3 hours and longer with much to find out around the park which includes the environment with its landscape and other unknown creatures. Then the village walks such as the Buhoma village walk because here a visitor gets a 3 hour cultural work through the village and this enables one to learn the ways and culture of the people that live in Buhoma area on the edge of Bwindi forest.
NOTE: Bwindi Impenetrable national park is known to be among the most secure national parks in the all of East Africa. This is because one cannot even enter into the park without having an armed ranger escort and these keep or watch the park 24/7 while the visitors are carrying out their activities. Therefore one cannot go on a gorilla trek without armed escort.
The park also has various places for resting and leisure around its and these include; Bwindi hostels/Backpackers lodge, Gorilla safari lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Hotel and many other more.
